Wayfinding and sign standards

We are updating signage across campus and all building signs should be complete by summer 2025. Our new wayfinding system meets AODA standards, including braille for constant information like room numbers and building codes. Signs are hung at approved heights to ensure a seamless experience.

In addition to installing the new wayfinding system, we will introduce exterior signage and interior space branding guidelines.

Simple coding system

Our system uses a three-letter code for each building. This code represents the building name in a clear, recognizable way and keeps signage consistent.

Code guidelines

  • Building names with fewer than three-words, use the first three letters of the first word e.g. Shawenjigewining Hall is SHA.
  • Building names with three or more words use the first letter of each word e.g. Software and Informatics Research Centre is SIR.
  • Corporate or donor names are not used in codes e.g. OPG Engineering Building is ENG.
  • Exclude generic terms like Building, Hall, Centre, Laboratory or Theatre e.g. Regent Theatre is REG.

*Building codes will officially change once the signage system within that building is updated.
