Alt text and accessibility

Alt text provides a textual description of images, charts or other non-text content for people who may not be able to see them.

  • All digital images require alt text.

  • Avoid phrases like image of or picture of as screen readers already identify the content as an image.

  • Keep all text concise and descriptive. Describe the image's purpose, not just what it looks like.

Example of good alt text

Image of students working in a lab:

  • Three students wearing safety goggles work together on an experiment in a chemistry lab.
