Indigenous Peoples

  • Use uppercase for Aboriginal Peoples and Indigenous Peoples, which includes all First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people in Canada. First Nations should also be capitalized.
  • Indigenous is the preferred term, as it reflects a broader global recognition.
  • Elder should always be capitalized when referring to an Indigenous Elder.
  • Use specific community names whenever possible, such as Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation. Always follow Indigenous spellings, such as Baagwating Community Association.
  • Avoid using terms like reserve, tribe and native. Preferred alternatives include community, home, people, nation, band.

Wherever possible, always be guided by the preference of those concerned. When in doubt, contact the Indigenous Education and Cultural Services at 905.721.8668 ext. 6795 or email indigenous@ontariotechu.ca.
