Dates

General formatting

  • Spell out the full name of the day of the week and the month, followed by the day.
    • Example: Classes begin on Thursday, September 18.
  • Do not use a comma between the month and year.
    • Example: The new program will launch in September 2012.

Academic and multi-year references

  • Use an en dash (–) to separate academic years.
    • Example: 2010–2011, 2011–2012.
  • Use 'to' instead of an en dash for multi-year periods.
    • Example: 2008 to 2012.
    • Include the year if the date is more than 12 months from publication or in the next calendar year.
  • Fiscal years may be abbreviated with FY.
    • Example: FY 2013–2014.

Events and scheduling

  • Include the day of the week when referring to upcoming events.
    • Example: Students returned to school on Tuesday, September 9.
  • For event weeks, use the week of [month, day to day].
    • Example: Orientation Week will take place September 2 to 6.
